Geology Field Trip

The Copper Basin region is a relatively undiscovered region offering pristine Wilderness and world-class recreational opportunities. Communities in the region are located along the border of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in North America. The Richardson Highway connects the Copper Basin to Valdez to the south and Fairbanks to the north, Anchorage is located188 miles to the west and to the east is vast mountain wilderness, which includes 9 of the 16 highest peaks in the United States.

The Copper River Basin calls students from around the world to raft its rivers, climb its mountains, and marvel at abundant wildlife. Home to the Ahtna Athabascan Indians; the region offers a strong cultural diversity. Most residents still live a subsistence lifestyle, which includes traditional activities such as dog sledding and dip netting for salmon.
