Course Descriptions

HS V080 Standard First Aid & CPR (.5)
This course trains lay responders to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults. Also provides lay responders with the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life and to minimize pain and the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives.

ITEC V087 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher (1.5)
This course is designed to meet the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120 annual required refresher training for emergency response to hazardous substance releases and hazardous waste site workers.

ITEC V101 24-Hour Initial HAZWOPER (1.5)
This course is designed to provide instructional requirements described in 29 CFR 1910.120 for emergency responders level III.

ITEC 123 Safety Laws and Standards (4)
This course explores the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations protecting workers from exposure to occupational hazards. Students concentrate on researching, interpreting, summarizing, and applying OSHA regulations. Students are introduced to a “proactive” philosophy of company compliance with OSHA regulations, with an emphasis on using eight specific approaches to providing a safe and healthful working environment. The course helps students develop and implement a Hazard Communication Program for employees. Learning activities will include interviewing safety professionals, analyzing case studies, writing reports, researching and interpreting OSHA standards in the Code of Federal Regulations, conducting a chemical inventory, interpreting material safety data sheets, and developing a written Hazard Communication Program.

ITEC 125 Confined Space Awareness (0.5)
This class is designed to give students the training that is required in the federal Confined Space Entry Regulations, 29 CFR 1910.146, for supervisors, attendants and entrants.

ITEC 165 Industrial Hygiene (5)
Prerequisite: CHEM 103
Introduces the fundamentals of industrial hygiene, including safety and health in the workplace. Subjects covered include ergonomics, physical, biological, and chemical hazards, and the role of industrial hygiene professionals.

ITEC 277 Incident Response Planning and Management (3)
This course introduces techniques of planning, organizing, and administering practical hazardous material management programs. It emphasizes uncontrolled hazardous waste sites, studies OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910.120) and related Alaska rules. It also covers the principles of site control, site modification, medical surveillance, personal protective equipment selection and use, site safety plans, emergency plans, training requirements, and
